If your parents moved from the big city to a small village in order to give you a more innocent childhood, they might have been barking up the wrong tree.

New research from the Center for Disease Control and Protection has found that women who live in rural areas are considerably more likely to become sexually active earlier, compared to women who live in cities.

Women who live in rural areas became sexually active on average aged 16.6 years, whereas city dwelling women became sexually active almost a year later, averaging their first time at the age of 17.4.

The research, which was conduced by the National Survey of Family Growth, interviewed 10,000 American women.

The survey also explored the different attitudes with regards to birth control demonstrated by women living in different situations. Women who live in the countryside tend to have more children (which makes sense – more space, generally lower property prices) but conversely they also use more powerful forms of birth control such as sterilisation or the copper coil.

Women who lived in cities tended to have fewer children (how many kids can you fit in a one bed flat) but to rely on less fool-proof contraception like the pill or the (not very reliable) withdrawal method.

The survey doesn’t directly address the reasons that women who live in rural areas start having sex earlier, but as someone who grew up in the middle of nowhere, I can personally attest that when you’re a teenager who can’t drive, there really isn’t that much else to do.
