‘You have stolen her childhood’ – judge tells paedophile who abused 8-year-old

A man who sexually abused a girl when she was just 8 years old has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Simon Crick, 41, of Tamar Close, St Ives, also admitted to attempting to rape his victim and taking indecent photos of her when she was under 13.

His horrific actions left the scared young girl, now aged 13, feeling "sad, dirty and upset".

Crick only changed his pleas to guilty two days into a trial at Cambridge Crown Court which started on Monday (April 9).

Sentencing him today (April 11), a judge said he feared Crick's abuse would haunt his victim for the rest of her life.

Police were alerted to Crick's sick abuse when his victim confided in another young girl of her own age.

A search of his home uncovered a digital camera that contained two indecent images of the victim.

A statement from the young girl was read out in court today (April 11) in which she said the abuse still affects her every day.

"He was nice to me but he had the other side of him which is when he would do things to me that made me feel sad, dirty and upset," she said.

"I've found things difficult. I haven't been eating properly for a long time.

"I don't know how to express myself and I get anxious. I don't know how to deal with these feelings.

"I'm worried about how it will affect me throughout my life. I'm worried about the future and how the memories will affect me."

Sentencing, Recorder Patrick Fields told Crick: "This sordid abuse is not simply something that occurred in the past. I fear she will be haunted by the memories for the rest of her life.

"You have not only abused her sexually but you have stolen her childhood."

Crick was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the attempted rape of a child under 13, seven years for three counts of sexual assault on a child under 13 and 11 years for sex by penetration of a child under 13.
