Boxing is one of the most dangerous sports in the world – particularly if you’re approaching your 70th birthday.

But ‘brave idiot’ John Atterton wasn’t put off by his age or his doctor’s advice not to fight as he picked up some gloves to box a man 46 years his junior.

Sadly, the match had a predictable result for the 69-year-old as he was knocked out in the second round by Ash Newman, 23.

However, the retired window cleaner and waiter from Grimsby, who had never boxed in his life, managed to raise £405 for Cancer Research UK.

John said: ‘When I got into the ring and saw him coming at me he was so fast. My thought was just to survive.’

He did more than that, making it to the second round before being knocked out by his opponent at the Beachcomber holiday park in Cleethorpes.

John was inspired to start training after his partner’s grandson started Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB), which lets beginners step into the ring and fight for charity after just eight weeks of training.

He trained for two months before fight night – where he forgot almost everything he learned as soon as the bell sounded.

John said: ‘He was just too fast and I could not stop the blows. I was panicking and then I started flapping.

‘I managed to get through the first round after being knocked down and surviving an eight count. I was taking some punishment.

‘I can’t remember the punch that put me down in the second round.’

John said he is ‘pretty fit’ for his age and wanted to step out of his comfort zone.

He added: ‘I got ever so much respect for doing it and everyone clapped and cheered as I walked into the ring to Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean. Afterwards they were all shaking my hand.

‘They said I was a brave idiot. I would never have made a boxer.’
