Staff members at a shop selling Jewish goods have been left shaken after a racist called and told them: ‘Hitler had the best ovens.’
The anonymous caller phoned Brauns Judaica in Stamford Hill, north London, just after 6pm on Thursday evening.
An unsuspecting staff member answered and, after hearing the anti-Semitic slur, was left ‘shocked’.
Mr Braun, who runs the shop, told Metro.co.uk that they were all horrified by the incident.
‘Late this afternoon, just after 6pm, one of our staff members received a phone call at the shop,’ he said.
‘He picked up the call and said, as usual, “Hello welcome to Brauns, how may I help you today?”
‘The caller on the other line just said, “Hitler had the best ovens” – and then hung up.’
The staff member who answered the phone added that he felt ‘disgusted, shocked and frightened by this unexpected call, especially when my grandparents and most members of my family perished in the war’.
Staff immediately called Shomrim, the local Jewish community security service, and the Metropolitan Police. They also closed the shop for the day, almost four hours earlier than usual.
Mr Braun added that he was disheartened, because ‘everyone should just together peacefully, abiding by their own beliefs and values’.
Rabbi Herschel Gluck OBE, president of the Stamford Hill Shomrim, told Metro.co.uk: ‘If there are still those that question the danger of the rise of the far right, this is a wake up call.’
Metro.co.uk has contacted the Met Police for comment.
