On the second day of his congressional campaign for District 21, Chip Roy received the endorsement of his former boss, Senator Ted Cruz.

“Chip Roy will provide much-needed reinforcements to help advance conservative ideas in Washington,” Senator Cruz said in a written statement to Breitbart Texas. “He is a dear friend, and a man of conviction, character, and deeply rooted conservative principle.”

Roy’s resume includes serving as Senator Cruz’ chief of staff during the first years of his Senate term. Following that, Roy went on to be the first assistant for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Responding to the endorsement, Roy told Breitbart Texas:

Senator Cruz’s proven commitment as a conservative to honor his campaign promises to Texans is the model for public service. The Senator and his conservative allies in both the Senate and the House need reinforcements to stand up for the American people and to send strong legislation to the President. I am proud the Senator has endorsed my record of commitment to conservative principles and look forward to taking my message to the people of the 21st Congressional District in Texas.

Senator Cruz frequently attacks establishment Republicans in the Congress and worked to help get people elected he believes will champion the conservative agenda.

“I know Chip, I trust Chip, and the people of Texas can always count on him to keep his word,” the senator explained. “I have no doubt Chip will immediately step up as a fearless conservative leader in Congress. I’m excited to wholeheartedly endorse his campaign and urge voters in Congressional District 21 to support him.”

Roy will be running for the congressional seat that became open following Representative Lamar Smith’s (R) announcement that he would not seek re-election in 2018. The filing deadline for the 2018 Texas Republican Primary Election is Monday, December 11. Early voting for the primary election begins on February 20. This leaves candidates about 11 weeks to get their message to voters.

Several seats in the Texas delegation will be awarded to new representatives this election cycle as both Democrat and Republican representatives have announced their retirement.

The district runs from northeastern San Antonio to parts of Austin.

Roy’s resume includes being a former federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Texas, staff director to Senator John Cornyn, senior counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, an advisor to then-Governor Rick Perry, chief of staff for Senator Ted Cruz, first assistant to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and vice president for strategy at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
