Police are hunting for a suspect who was caught on film escaping their car – after they left the driver’s door open.
Footage caught on the day of the incident shows two officers wrestling a man to the ground by the side of the marked vehicle at around 8.20am on Wednesday.
But they are left stunned as another man – who had been detained in the back seat – is seen climbing over and escaping via the open door.
He then sprinted down Bristol Road in central Birmingham – but despite passing three further police vehicles, he is still on the run.
Police later confirmed that the second suspect, a 25-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs after they pulled over an uninsured car.
Danny Carter, 31, filmed the escape as he waited in rush hour traffic on his way to work.
Tweeting the image, the marketer, of Selly Oak, Birmingham, said: ‘Just another day in Birmingham. Some chap pegging it after getting nicked.
‘By the time I could make out what was happening, the man was already in the back of the police car, and the officer was closing the door and going to assist his colleague.
‘I didn’t get to see what happened in the build-up.
‘I originally thought that the police were being heavy handed, but as the incident started to unfold it was clear that the police had no other choice as the man was trying very hard to fight them off.
‘It’s not clear in the video, but it looked like he climbed from the back seat to the front of the police car and made his escape. That guy then fled the scene on foot.
‘I didn’t see anyone trying to give chase to the one who fled on foot, there was not that many pedestrians around.
‘I couldn’t believe the audacity of the one guy who had been detained already to escape from the police car and run. I’ve never seen anything like it.
‘I didn’t really think it was cheeky, it was more the audacity that he even contemplated it – I don’t think the thought of trying to escape would have crossed my mind.’
A spokesperson West Midlands Police said: ‘Class A drugs and an imitation firearm were today seized by officers after swooping on a car in Birmingham.
‘The vehicle was pulled over in Bristol Street at around 8.20am after flagging up on the police ANPR system as being uninsured.
‘A search of the car recovered wraps of cocaine and a BB gun.
‘A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs and remains in custody for questioning.
‘A second man who fled the scene is currently being sought by officers.’
