A trainee plumber who finished a drinking session by stabbing his best friend in the back and leaving him to die has been jailed.

Ashley Dunford, 20, had downed a bottle of Jägermeister after spending all afternoon and evening drinking beer in the pub when he plunged a kitchen knife into his mate.

As the bleeding heavily victim stumbled around instead of calling for an ambulance Dunford shouted: ‘Die you b******, I hope you die, you deserve it.’

The victim survived and pressed charges on his former friends and Dunford was jailed for four-and-a-half years after he admitted wounding at Hull Crown Court.

Tim Savage, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court the pair had been drinking at The Goodfellowship Inn in Cottingham Road on the afternoon of April 23.

Mr Savage said: ‘The complainant told the defendant to shut up but the defendant then turned on the complainant and said ‘I will stab you. I will murder you. I will kill you.’

‘They scuffled and the complainant left the bedroom and went downstairs. As he walked downstairs he stabbed him from behind.’

The victim had a 4cm deep stab wound which reached the muscles of the chest wall and required stitches.

In a victim impact statement, Dunford’s former best friend said he was left in ‘shock and disbelief’ by the attack.

The Hull Daily Mail reported he said: ‘I feel let down by him and I am angry with him. I supported him through difficult times when no one else would.

‘I only want to see him in court. I want him to see what he has done to his so-called best friend.’

Recorder Mark Cran QC concluded Dunford was a danger to society.

He said: ‘There is a significant risk of serious harm to the public from the commission of a further offence.

‘I fully accept that you are young and there is every possibility you will mature and grow out of whatever it is that compelled you to commit this offence.’

In mitigation Dunford’s solicitor Steven Garth said the defendant was so drunk he was ‘senseless’ and he was truly sorry for what had happened.
