A 999 operator has resigned after a young woman was killed in a car chase with a love rival and her ex-boyfriend.
The call handler spoke with ‘dismissiveness’ when terrified Sophie Taylor, 22, rang to tell police of her fears before the late-night chase.
In separate cars, Michael Wheeler, 23, and Melissa Pesticcio, 24, drove terrified Sophie to her death in a high-speed pursuit through Cardiff.
She was killed when ex-boyfriend Wheeler deliberately barged her black BMW into the brick wall of a house after a row.
As her body was pulled from the wreckage of her BMW, both Pesticcio and Wheeler hid around the corner.
They were later jailed for a total of 14 years.
An investigation by the Independent Police Complains Commission was launched into calls made to police by Sophie regarding ‘concerns about her ex-boyfriend’ before her death.
An IPCC spokesman said: ‘Investigators analysed police incident logs, the audio of radio and telephone communications and evidence obtained as a result of the criminal investigation relating to Wheeler and Pesticcio.’
Their probe found a call handler failed to ‘input sufficient detail’ and displayed ‘apparent dismissiveness’ when speaking to Miss Taylor for 24 minutes just after midnight on August 22.
The spokesman added: ‘The police staff member concerned had resigned prior to being issued with a misconduct notice, meaning no disciplinary proceedings could be initiated.’
CCTV footage showed Wheeler and Pesticcio chasing Miss Taylor at speeds of up to 56mph.
Wheeler ‘rammed’ the side of Miss Taylor’s car, causing it to spin out of control and crash into a block of flats.
Miss Taylor died in hospital while her friend and passenger Joshua Deguara suffered life-changing injuries.
Cardiff Crown Court heard Wheeler had been in a relationship with Pesticcio when he started dating Miss Taylor in June last year.
The relationship between Wheeler and Miss Taylor ended weeks later, with Pesticcio and Wheeler becoming ‘increasingly hostile’ towards her.
