A man who was asked to leave a party jumped out of a window and impaled his groin on a spiked fence, police have said.
Witnesses who were at the gathering said they were ‘just hanging out’ at the apartment in Harlem, New York, in the early hours of Monday morning.
Shortly afterwards, to everyone’s shock, 27-year-old Eliseo Alvarado-Gonzalez tried to leave by jumping out of the window, falling more than 12 feet.
He then landed on an eight-foot-tall wrought iron fence that was in front of the building.
‘We were all drinking, we were all talking here,’ Gonzalez’s friend Celso Guzman Rios, 31, said. ‘Me and another friend went out to buy beer and we saw him hanging on the fence… When I saw him on the fence, I said, “Holy fucking shit!”‘
Rios, Gonzalez and three other friends were reportedly having an all-night party at a flat on West 135th Street.
At one point witnesses say Gonzalez was asked to leave because he was making too much noise.
Rios said: ‘He didn’t want to leave. My friend said, “leave or I’m going to call the police”. But he wouldn’t leave. Then I lost sight of him.’
Soon afterwards Gonzalez jumped – and Rios saw his friend impaled on the fence, bleeding into the street below.
‘I lifted him up,’ Rios said. ‘He didn’t scream or anything. He must have been numb, he must have been too drunk to feel anything. There was a lot of blood flowing from his leg.’
The emergency services had to cut out a four-foot section of the fence in order to pull Gonzalez down to safety.
New York Police said he was then rushed to Mount Sinai St Luke’s hospital, where he underwent surgery and was placed in a medically-induced coma.
Inside the flat a fight then broke out among the other friends, who all blamed each other for the shocking incident.
Jamie Mendez, 28, allegedly smashed a bottle of Corona over another man’s head. He was later arrested on second-degree assault charges.
