Emergency repairs to a burst water main in the centre of Cambridge are delaying motorists today (February 8).

Engineers are working to fix the problem at the major four-way junction of Lensfield Road with Regent Street, Hills Road and Gonville Place.

Work started at around 9.30am and is expected to continue until the early evening rush hour.

Drivers have been warned to expect delays.

Photos from the area show a digger excavating the middle of Lensfield Road to reach the damaged pipes.

A spokeswoman for Cambridge Water said traffic would be controlled manually.

A spokeswoman for Cambridge Water said: "Cambridge Water will be switching off the existing 4-way signals and pedestrian crossings and temporary four-way lights and pedestrian crossings will be erected for the duration of the works.

"Traffic management will be manually controlled at all times to ease the traffic flow.

"As soon as the repair has been completed, a grab lorry and reinstatement team is ready to backfill/tarmac."
