The fifth day of chicken shortages from fast food giant KFC has seen the franchise keep most of its East of England branches closed.

Around 300 of the UK's 870 restaurants remain open for business, while only 13 are open around the Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Milton Keynes areas.

The chicken experts blamed "teething problems" with a new delivery partner for the lack of food, which first became a problem on Thursday night (February 15).

The company updated its website with a list of 'open' stores at 7.30pm today (February 20).

KFC– which has been going since 1930 – also declared that getting fresh chicken out to its restaurants across the country "is pretty complex."

They added: "We won't compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed, others are operating a limited menu or shortened hours."

In a statement a KFC spokesman told our sister publication Mirror Online: "We anticipate the number of closures will reduce today and over the coming days as our teams work flat out all hours to clear the backlog.

"Each day more deliveries are being made, however, we expect the disruption to some restaurants to continue over the remainder of the week, meaning some will be closed and others operating with a reduced menu or shortened hours."

DHL, who has recently taken over deliveries for KFC, added: "Due to operational issues a number of deliveries in recent days have been incomplete or delayed.

"We are working with our partners to rectify the situation as a priority and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

It is unknown when the restaurants currently closed will reopen.
