Donors in Cambridge are being asked to fill empty appointment slots to make sure blood stocks don’t drop even further before Easter.

Despite the goodwill of donors coming forward recently, there are still almost 350 appointments to fill at Cambridge Donor Centre in the run up to Easter, when blood stocks are due to take another hit with people going on holiday or enjoying time with their family.

The recent bad weather led to some sessions being cancelled and 6,000 to 7,000 units of blood were lost, which could take weeks to recover.

Stocks of group O, group B, and A positive blood are particularly low at the moment.

Hospitals across England need more than 6,000 blood donations every day to treat patients in emergency situations or with ongoing treatment for things like blood disorders or cancers.

Facts about giving blood

Most people can give blood. You can give blood if you:

  • are aged between 17 and 66 (or 70 if you have given blood before)
  • are over 70 and have given blood in the last two years

Men can give blood every 12 weeks and women can give blood every 16 weeks.

Jon Latham, assistant director of blood marketing at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “Donors have been amazing so far at responding to our call for help to improve the blood stock situation.

“However, there are still appointments not yet booked for the coming days at Cambridge donor centre in Long Road, Cambridge.

“We really need people who can give blood to book an appointment and help us in the run up to Easter.

“The recent bad weather hit our blood stocks and we now need to make up that shortfall. We can only do this with the help of our generous donors who come out in all weathers to help keep the blood flowing.”

There are 23 dedicated blood donor centres in England. Donor centres are bright and modern venues with free Wifi and longer opening hours than community venues.
