Comedian Peter Kay has broken a three-month public silence since cancelling his stand-up tour.

He cancelled the entire tour – his first since 2010 – at the end of last year, citing 'unforeseen family circumstances'.

Today the Bolton comedian tweeted to promote a charity Car Share screening next month.

The event will be held to raise money for a children's charity. Two new episodes of the hit sitcom will be shown on the night, reports Mirror Online.

"Exciting news: A charity screening of new Peter Kays Car Share episodes will be held at Blackpool Opera House on Saturday 7th April. Tickets on sale Saturday at 9am," he wrote.

He included a link to the Ticketmaster site which is selling tickets for £13.20 each.

The money raised will go towards the Lily Foundation, which helps children with mitochondrial disease – and Peter said he has had "first-hand experience" of its work.

Tickets go on sale at 9am on Saturday, March 31, from Ticketmaster.

In a blog post, Ticketmaster said: "Blackpool Opera House will host a special charity screening of Peter Kays award-winning BBC series Car Share.

"The event will showcase four episodes of the BBC One sitcom, including the premiere of two brand new episodes – Car Share: Unscripted and the series finale.

"Funds raised from the event will support the Lily Foundation ."

A quote from Peter said: "The Lily Foundation is an inspiring charity that helps to improve the lives of children with mitochondrial disease.

"I've had first-hand experience of the foundation's work and I'm proud to raise both awareness and much needed funds to help with the inspiring work they provide to children and their families."

The blog post went on: "Fans will be able to watch the exploits of John and Kayleigh, played by Peter Kay and Sian Gibson respectively, on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

"The series first aired on the BBC in 2015, introducing assistant manager John and promotions rep Kayleigh to the world. To date the series consists of two seasons, with each episode showing the pairs often hilarious journeys to and from work.

"The unscripted episode and the series finale will round off season two at the charity event.

"Peter Kays Car Share has celebrated critical success, winning Best Comedy at the 2016 National TV Awards, as well as the 2016 BAFTA for Best Male Performance and Best Scripted Comedy."

Both new episodes are set to be screened on the BBC later this year.

Fans were left devastated when the second series ended with Kayleigh stepping out of John's car and his life forever.

More than 100,000 people signed a petition demanding another ending.

And confirming their wish would be granted, appearing on Children In Need 2017, Peter, 44, said: "We were completely overwhelmed by the response and even though we've no plans to write a third series we knew we couldn't end the story there."

Back in December Peter released a statement to announce his tour cancellation.

"Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects," he wrote.

"This includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance for Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments."

"My sincerest apologies," he continued, insisting the decision had not been "taken lightly".

"I'm sure you'll understand that my family must always come first," he said
