Drivers are facing huge delays in the city today (April 13) after a car crashed into a generator.

The car, which crashed into the power source for the traffic lights at the Newmarket Road and Coldhams Lane junction in Cambridge, crashed last night (April 12).

No-one was injured in the collision and no-one was arrested.

Disruption could last nearly a week, as the generator needs to be completely replaced.

There are long delays on Newmarket Road

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire County Council said: " Due to the incident that happened the control box has been damaged, so needs replacing. The temporary traffic lights are there to keep it safe for drivers and cyclists.

"We are looking to resolve it by the end of next week or as soon as possible."

Currently traffic is unable to turn right onto Newmarket Road from Coldhams Lane because of the four-way traffic lights.

A diversion is in place for traffic to turn left and then use the roundabout to get back in the right direction.

Drivers are being urged to use alternate routes where possible.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: "We were called at 9.30pm yesterday (April 12) by the ambulance service. It appears no-one was injured but ambulance did attend.

"It only mentions one vehicle and it looks like a generator was damaged as a result of the incident which affected power to the traffic lights.

"There were no arrests."
