Firefighters came to the aid of a trapped horse that fell into a water-filled ditch.

The animal had become almost completely submerged in the channel on New Cut Road in Thorney on Saturday (May 5).

Two Cambrigeshire Fire and Rescue service crews from Dogsthorpe, another from Wisbech and the north roaming fire engine were called at 1.34 pm to the incident.

Arriving to find the horse stuck in the water, the firefighters used the crane arm of a transporter to lift the muddy horse into the air and back onto dry land.

Photos from the incident show firefighters attaching a rope around the horse while it was in the water, before it was lifted into the air.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Working with the owners and a vet they safely released the horse using a transporter."

He added that the horse was found to be unharmed after the successful rescue and that crews had returned to their stations by 4.55pm.
