MP for Peterborough Paul Bristow has spoken of his disappointment at the city being placed under Tier 3 restrictions.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced today (December 17) that Peterborough was among the areas being placed under ‘Very High Alert’ from Saturday (December 19).

Mr Hancock told MPs that cases in the East of England were up two thirds and hospital admissions had gone up by nearly half in the last week.

The announcement came after the latest Covid-19 figures, published yesterday (December 16), showed that Peterborough has 296.6 Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people.

Mr Bristow posted a two minute video to Twitter in response to the news, in which he expressed his disappointment.

He said: “Today is not a good day for my city.

“We enter into Tier 3 from Saturday and this is something that I hoped could have been avoided. It is such disappointing news, especially for all the hospitality industries.

“From talking to public health officials here in Peterborough, it is not these venues that are driving infection. In fact there are other reasons, such as inter-generational and household mixing.

“That’s why it is so important to follow the rules.”

However Mr Bristow, who was elected in 2019, wished to remain positive and stated his appreciation for the spirit of Peterborough’s residents.

He added: “The positive element is that there is a way forward. The vaccine is being distributed and rolled out here in Cambridgeshire.

“Peterborough City Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the world to get that Covid-19 vaccine.

“It is another opportunity for Peterborough to show what we’re made of.

“We’ve looked after the vulnerable, we’ve looked after those who are shielding and we’ve looked after our neighbours.

“Peterborough is a very special city and we’ve shown that through the first and second lockdown, and the restrictions.

“I know that we’ll do it again.

“With mass testing, a vaccine and everyone following the rules, I know that in 2021, we will come out, hopefully, of these horrid tier restrictions and get back to normality as quickly as possible.”

Peterborough will be under Tier 3 restrictions from one minute past midnight on Saturday, which will see many changes including the closure of hospitality venues.
