The UK and EU have been closing in on a deal in recent days, with hopes both sides can overcome the contentious issues of the so-called level playing field, and fisheries. With just days until the end of the transition period, the European Commission has told member states to be ready for a meeting on Thursday, if a deal is finalised today, according to EU sources.

The UK and the EU remained divided over competition and fishing as both sides try to clinch a Brexit trade deal in time to avoid a turbulent split at the end of the year.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen are in close contact in an effort to resolve remaining difficulties.
