An inquest has opened into the death of Louis Thorold, the 5-month-old baby killed in a horror crash in Cambridgeshire.

Louis, nicknamed ‘little Lou’ by his dad, died after a van collided with his pram on January 22.

The provisional cause of death has been given as a traumatic head injury, Lawrence Court heard today.

Police said the incident happened at around 3.50pm as his mother, Rachael Thorold, was pushing Louis in a pram on the pavement of the A10 in Waterbeach.

A grey Mazda 2 collided with a white Renault Master van, before the van left the road and hit the pram and Ms Thorold, who was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the van and the driver of the Mazda suffered slight injuries and remained at the scene.

The tragedy sparked an outpouring of support from the local community, with hundreds having donated on Louis’ fundraising page.

More than £20,000 has been raised in Louis’ memory. The money will go towards East Anglia Air Ambulance and road safety charity Brake.

Louis’s dad Chris has paid a tear-jerking tribute to his baby boy, saying “you made us the happiest people in the world”.

“I cannot describe how heartbroken we are that you are gone. You are such a happy little boy and your joyful smile and laughter will never leave us,” he said.

“Your ma-ma is fighting to stay with us and we are praying that she will make it through.

“You will always be in our hearts and do not worry, I am taking care of all your animals.

“We love you so much and we know you will now be safe with Granny, Grandad and Great Grandpa in Heaven.”

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision or moments leading up to it.

Anyone with information should call 101 or visit www.cambs.police.uk/report quoting incident 278 of January 22.

A pre-inquest review hearing for Louis’ death was listed for April 26.
